Quinn is walking now (finally!), so our lives have changed quite a bit and have been moved, at his behest, into the front yard.
The second photograph is of our sanctuary at Redeemer. I took this a few weeks ago with a fisheye and used this photograph in our recent newsletter. We are quickly approaching our first anniversary as a new church.
Hope everyone is enjoying the change in season and has a great weekend. Blessings!
Today is my son's first birthday. Because everyone in my family wanted to see how fast a son of mine could eat cake for the first time, we celebrated early over Thanksgiving weekend. You can see more sugar high birthday photographs here.
In my sermon yesterday, I mentioned a set of accountability questions that someone had emailed me. My point was that all too often, 'accountability' resides only in the surface realms of "Did you look at pornography" or "Did you drink too much?" instead of addressing the heart behind why we sin. The "sin beneath the sin" if you will.
Here is the link to Stephen Altrogge's 7 Tough Questions To Ask Your Friends, where he outlines the kinds of heart exposing questions he asks his friends as well as offers a bit of commentary on each. I've listed his questions below.
Have you been consistently pursuing the Lord through scripture reading and prayer?
Have you diligently pursued your wife/husband this week?
Have you seen any persistent patterns of sin in your life recently?
Last week you confessed struggling with [insert sin]. Have you taken steps to fight it this week?
When you gave into [insert sin], what were you believing about God in that moment? What were you believing about yourself?
What is the truth that you need to believe in this situation?
When you had the conflict with [insert person], what were you craving at that moment? (source)
Haven't had much time to get out and take pictures, besides a photo walk with Jeremy and some family portraits for friends. You would think I was trying to plant a church or something! For now, my subject matter will likely remain limited to our little boy who is blissfully unaware of his gigantic cranium.
I'm preaching Ephesians 4.1-6 this Sunday at Redeemer and I'm thoroughly enjoying my time in preparation.
It's been entirely too long since I've seen that sunset, and Quinn has never seen it. The Cawleys are heading out on a much needed vacation. No phone. No text. No email! I can't wait...
See you next week!
a quick candid I took this morning while Quinn was sitting with me at my desk...just PhotoBooth and the built in iSight on my MacBook...he's a pretty good study help when he's not eating my notes!
Since 2005, we have been a one car family. And, given that Katie uses our car the majority of the time, the walkability of the neighborhood we live in is pretty important to me. Actually, walkability is important to me for social and theological reasons-- so my concern would be the same whether we had four cars or none (why walking matters).
Though over 60% of Kansas Citians live in car-dependent neighborhoods, we are fortunate to live on the dividing lines of the five most walkable neighborhoods in the city!
“No, I finished my coursework at Regent and we are in the process of planting a church in Kansas City.”
“Oh...Wow! I had no idea. So, how do you like living in KC?”
“Well, we’ve actually been living in Little Rock since last summer...it’s kind of a long story”
This pretty much summarizes the opening segment of every conversation I’ve had for the past eighteen months. The good news is, we are finally in Kansas City!
And, by God’s stunning grace, our plans to plant a new church in the urban core of KC are moving forward at a blinding pace and in ways much different and more beautiful than we ever could have conceived.
What follows is my attempt to provide a brief sketch of some of what has transpired in the past year and to update those who are interested on what we are currently doing in Kansas City.
People continue to comment to me that I haven't added anything in the way of real content to this site in almost three years, and I continue to laugh them off and tell them that I've had other stuff going on. However, I realized last week that it has been over a year since I have even made minor additions here (like updating my book and music lists).
Since this site has become little more than a repository for photos of my son's growing head, I decided that it's time for some real updates.
Not that you should be expecting the re-emergence of a steady flow of posts, but there is a lot of exciting news that has happened since we moved to Arkansas last summer that I'm eager to share. Most importantly, I want to update those who are interested about our church planting progress in Kansas City.
My major update will be finished sometime this weekend, and I will post it sometime between now and when I head out for Together for the Gospel bright and early next Tuesday morning. In the meantime, I will be posting smaller updates and tweaking a few things on the site that have gotten squirrelly as a result of my neglect.
I am also working on some major site updates at our Reach Kansas City website. Those that have found that site useful in the past should watch out for a decent amount of updated content.
Speaking of updates, everyone should be refreshing their Schrute consciousness in preparation for the return of The Office tonight!!
"Everyone always wants new things. Everybody likes new inventions, new technology. People will never be replaced by machines. In the end, life and business are about human connections.
And computers are about trying to murder you in a lake."
Last Thursday, my hard drive died. Not crashed. Died. Forever. Dead. Gone.
I had backups in several places but hadn't backed up my Entourage user data in a long time. And, the backup I made of my Entourage user data in November-- for whatever reason refuses to work. So, unless someone can help me resurrect this backup I have from November, I have lost every email I wrote and received since July. If that makes you shudder, imagine how it makes me feel...

And, because I need the laugh, I thought I would conclude by sharing Michael Scott's terrifying experience with technology...I've actually never felt more like him than I do right now.
