Is Photography Dead?

ME@85

Is Photography Dead? This is the question that Peter Plagens explores in the Dec 10 issue of Newsweek.

He concludes the article in this way:

Photography is finally escaping any dependence on what is in front of a lens, but it comes at the price of its special claim on a viewer's attention as "evidence" rooted in reality. As gallery material, photographs are now essentially no different from paintings concocted entirely from an artist's imagination, except that they lack painting's manual touch and surface variation. As the great modern photographer Lisette Model once said, "Photography is the easiest art, which perhaps makes it the hardest." She had no idea how easy exotic effects would get, and just how hard that would make it to capture beauty and truth in the same photograph. The next great photographers—if there are to be any—will have to find a way to reclaim photography's special link to reality. And they'll have to do it in a brand-new way.

I'm a merely an amateur-hobbyist photographer, and an aspiring one at that. And a hack even at that. But, Plagens' article does raise some interesting points about the way digital has changed the way people make photographs and interact with them.

I've gotten a lot of questions about my obvious increasing interest in photography over the past few years, and I'm eager to explain that genesis in my life sometime in the near future. In the meantime, Plagen's article will have to do.

Kansas City @ Flickr "Places"

Kansas City (Flickr Places)-1

My fascination with flickr and the degree to which I use it often makes me forget that many people are unaware that flickr even exists — not to mention the resources it offers to people beyond photography.

For example, anytime people call me for advice because they're going to Vancouver on a trip, I immediately direct them to the Vancouver flickr group. The near 3,000 group members not only discuss the best place to shop for photo gear (which we all know is beau photo), but they also discuss ad infinitum best bars, best pizza, best sushi, etc.

Enter flickr's new Places feature. It could be just another time waster, or it could be a strategic launching pad for all sorts of city and cultural research for reasons ranging from travel to church planting.

Check out Kansas City @ flickr's Places — or check out your place

You should also check out Reach Kansas City for updates on our work to plant a new church in the urban core of Kansas City.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Cawleys!

Happy Thanksgiving

Though we are away from family for the first time ever (because Katie is 38 weeks pregnant), God has given us a great deal to be thankful for today. Countless things beyond geographic relocation have transpired since I wrote my 2005 Thanksgiving Reflections, but we are no less in awe of the God who created the universe and no less aware of his sovereign care.

May our Great and Mighty God awaken in your hearts today a spirit of thanksgiving that flows from a heart that treasures Christ as your only good. And may time spent with family and friends today and throughout the coming Advent season awaken in all of us a passion for the great feast that awaits those who treasure Christ in the age to come.
